The Tascosaurus abritus

Client: The Montreal Biodome, 2018

About this project

As part of the exhibition, “La nature pour toit”, the Biodome wanted to create a chimera between five different animals that could be used as a fun educational tool for children which explains the adaptations animals have to find and build shelters for themselves. With help from my colleagues at the Biodome, we created this chimera around the acronyme TASCO which represents the five adaptations (in french).

(the acronym is in french)

Weeving (Tisser in french) : a beak, inspired by the weaverbird.

Assemble : Hands, inspired by the beaver.

Secrete : Spider's abdomen, to secrete a web.

Dig (Creuser in french): With big claws, like certain birds.

Occupy : The coconut, concept inspired by the coconut octopus, that uses the coconut as a shelter.

1. Preliminary sketches

And initial contact

I was instructed to use a colour pallet designed for the exhibition and to create a friendly character for children using the elements of the acronym. Multiple sketches were completed each with a different focus. One sketch was reminiscent of a penguin, another a macaque, while the chosen design was inspired by the shape of an emu!

2. Final sketches

And choice by the client

After the first sketch, I elaborated on different variations of the chosen design, then once the changes were approved, I made several coloured sketches.

3. Final rendering

And corrections

It wasn’t until all of these variables were approved that I started illustrating the final piece which included all the details the client was expecting. Since all the illustration is done digitally, several rounds of corrections are included in the price of the work to make sure everything is exactly to the liking of the client. The Tascosaurus abritus was thus created, and the Biodome used the illustration as part of an educational game for the summer of 2018.
